Already a jazz legend, in 1959, at the height of his early career, Sonny Rollins took a three-year sabbatical from performing. He left the jazz scene to practice on the pedestrian walkway of the Williamsburg Bridge.
“Playing against the sky really does improve your volume and your wind capacity. I could have just stayed up there forever.” – Sonny Rollins
Given Rollins relationship to it, an effort to rename the bridge after Sonny is growing. We’ve created this image to help promote that effort. Lets put Art before Politics – Be a walking ad – If renamed the Sonny Rollins Bridge, this incredible structure will be a monument not only to Sonny but to all the artists that have been and will be.
